More Giants
Sheshai – Ahiman – Talmai
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjatharba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. (Judges 1:10)
The Word Kirjatharba Recorded Six Times
The First Mention: And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same [is] Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. (Genesis 23:2)

The Fourth Mention and continuation of the cities of refuge. And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which [is] Hebron, in the mountain of Judah. (Joshua 20:7)
And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. (Joshua 20:8)
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation. (Joshua 20:9)

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjatharba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. (Judges 1:10)
There is so much here that I have to go back to this link (for those who have not been following this series from the beginning) in order to set some important information in the forefront: who are the Canaanites, and how do they relate to the giants? It is easier for you to link back and read then for me to re-post entire paragraphs of historical matter. Where did the giants originate? How did the giants move historically from before the deluge to appear again on earth after the universal flood? https://thegenesisepic.com/giants-in-the-earth-part-iii/
A very brief summary: the Canaanites descended from Canaan, a son of Ham, a CURSED son of Ham. This tribe became a continuous enemy throughout the history of Israel. Yes, they were giants; however, through intermarriage and intermingling with Israel these giants were able to slowly change their intimidating monstrous size. Thus, their evilness and hatred against the people of God became hidden behind their diminished appearance due to their intermingling. As decades and centuries flowed quickly downstream many Canaanites were able to deceive by their smaller size and thus they appeared to be non-threatening. As many today do not perceive the danger of their enemies, Israel then also failed to recognize the enemies within their ranks. The Word of God is so true, and so perfect in describing the actions of our spiritual enemies that we (Christians) unless faced with an actual physical threat, have difficulty in seeing who are the enemies of our salvation. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:15)
The Canaanites not only were the physical warriors fighting against Israel, but they were also spiritual enemies undermining the Word of God, and refusing the message of God through their pagan prophets (only a remnant of Israel remained faithful to God throughout their history). Israel (religiously and politically) failed and fell, so too the Church has failed and fallen. As Israel was deceived by its political and religious leaders, so too the Church has been deceived from within and from without. I speak of the Church as two distinct entities: 1) an outward church with all its buildings, wealth, pomp, building programs, and social activities; 2) and those who have been born again and make up His Body and His Bride — that Church: the unrecognized Church, the rejected Church, the Church of the two’s and three’s and the individuals who have stepped outside of the system church, and have separated themselves from the ministering giants of the prosperity gospel, and the ministering giants of the feel good gospel, and the ministering giants of entertainment, and the ministering giants of marketing techniques, and the ministering giants of a bloodless salvation, and the ministering giants of a social welfare gospel.
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjatharba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. This verse in Judges 1:10 is the connection proof that the clan of Cain, the Canaanites were (for the most part at this time in history) still giants. Remember that this particular clan or tribe was not the only giants in the land; however, they were a tribe of great significance that played a leading role in the spiritual declension of Israel and the physical conflict that for a large part of Israel’s early history enslaved the people of God.
Let us trace Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. Twice we are reminded that these three individuals were the sons of Anak.Â
And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, [were]. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) (Numbers 13:22)
And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak. (Joshua 15:14)
Isn’t God the Holy Spirit fantastic in the development of a story line? He drops a name here, and then He drops the name further on in Scripture in His desire to teach the reader to see the many tones and colors flowing within His message. As the eyes of an artist can readily see many colors within the whiteness of a cloud, the eyes of the reader of Scripture (led by the Spirit of God) can understand God’s message and teaching locked in the rich colors of time and history.
In Judges 1:10 we are introduced to three more giants, the sons of Anak, and the grandchildren of Arba. Kirjatharba (the city of Four) now takes on another direction. The city of Arba was named after Arba, and most probably by Arba himself, in dedication to his offspring much like Cain named the first city on this planet after his offspring. A tree doesn’t stand alone, nor does the acorn deny its parentage, but both have deep roots buried unseen beneath those who stride above unaware of what lies beneath their feet. From our view above the ground we cannot see the tangled roots that stretch out for long distances until they become almost like the web of a spider. This could be a description of the progressive evil of the clan of Cain in their gigantic influence of evil and destruction; therefore, the study of Giants in the Earth is (in my opinion) necessary to reveal the hidden and the seen power that the ‘prince of the air’ has employed through his ministers. Yes, even the ministers of Satan’s giants.
The Three Giant Brothers — Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai
Let us see what God has for us in these three giants. The name of the giant Ahiman is mentioned three times in Scripture, and one time as the name of an Israelite in 1st Chronicles. Ahiman means ‘brother’ or ‘brother of gifts’ or ‘brother of a portion.’ It takes on the sense of being a part of, a connection, a strong tie. Sheshai is also mentioned three times. His name paints a picture of something pure, and refined: Sheshai means ‘whitish,’ and/or ‘my fine linen,’ and/or ‘white linen.’ It also takes on the thought of the elegance of silk or the majesty and strength of marble. After writing this, what comes to your mind? Yup . . . a priest . . . a priesthood! A pagan priesthood directed by a giant of a man, a giant priest. Every culture MUST have a priesthood in order to control the people. Religion and emotionalism are a MUST in order to advance tyranny.
Talmai, the third son of Anak, is a study of a name that reaches into the history of Israel of a rather odd connection. I almost hesitate to develop the study of this name (I said ‘almost hesitate.’) This name means ‘my furrows,’ ‘full of furrows,’ ‘ridged,’ ‘to accumulate,’ ‘a bank or terrace’ built or constructed layer upon layer. In the name of Talmai we see the land being prepared and pruned for the further planting and development of evil. Let us rely on the guidance of the Spirit of God to go where He wants us to go, and to see what He wants us to see. Bible studies are adventurous and fun.
For those who have never had the challenge of planting a crop, or who have never watched a farmer working: furrowing is the labor of turning ground over to prepare for planting. It involves plowing, roto-tilling, cutting into the ground, and in many cases it involves changing the very structure and landscape of the terrain. It is laborious and time consuming thankless labor using instruments and equipment that can be sharp and dangerous. Where do we go from here? Let us look at the name of Talmai and trace where it appears in the Word of God.
— The Time Element in Judges 1:10 is approximately 1425 B.C. —
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjatharba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. (Judges 1:10)
— Fast Forward to Approximately 375 – 400 years in Time —
Let us follow the spidery roots that spread out from the tree system of Talmai.
— The Time Element in 2 Samuel 3:3 is approximately 1053 B.C. —
And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; (2 Samuel 3:3)
But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And [David] mourned for his son every day. (2 Samuel 13:37)
The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith: (1 Chronicles 3:2)
It is important to draw your attention to the time span between these two sections of Scripture. The first time that we see the name Talmai is approximately 1425 B.C., and the next time that this name appears forward in history is approximately 1053 B.C. This is a rough approximation, however, for our purpose this does not require time set in concrete. (I will not put time periods or a time line in this article as it will lead into streets of distraction).
The name Talmai is mentioned six (6) times in the Bible. (Six-the number of man, or should I write the number of sinful man). The first three times Talmai is connected to the giants in the age of Joshua. The next time we see this name it is connected to Absalom. This name never ever appears again in connection with any other tribe or individual. Following names and whom they are attached to is quite significant. Three hundred and seventy-two years to four hundred years after the first mention of the name of Talmai we again see this name attached to Absalom’s mother Maacah. The ground for evil had to be prepared, turned over, furrowed and cultivated for a specific purpose, and that was to infiltrate into the line of God’s chosen king David, and to influence the young nation of Israel. Stay with me . . . we are dealing with two different ages of time, two different locations, and yet, one very striking similarity — giants in the land.
The evilness of the Canaanites (the clan of Cain — the original giants —   or the giant prototypes) was deeply entrenched in Israel and especially in the mountains of Judah, but do not forget what we have written previously concerning the giant named Og of Bashan (which is situated in the territory of Golan). Geshur is in the southern region of Golan Heights. Are you beginning to see the connections and how one thread can entangle other loose strings until you have a tight ball that is almost impossible to untangle? This is the clan of Cain. Absalom’s mother was from the region of the giants, and thus most probably from the ancestry of the giants. But where is the connection? The connection is in the six mentions of the name of Talmai.
We see the names Maacah and Maachah (both are the same, and both mean the same). This name also was used by both men and women, it did not denote gender, but it did denote power. The primitive root of both names is ‘to press,’ ‘to pierce,’ to ‘handle,’ to ‘bruise,’ to apply ‘pressure,’ and to ‘emasculate.’ Can you not see the earth being turned over and pressed, handled and bruised to force the ground to produce what it was not meant to produce? Can you see a people, a kingdom, being pressed, and turned over, and bruised to become what the giants of evil want to produce? The word ‘emasculate’ becomes a powerful tool to force the will of one individual with power over another. Let us look further into the wife of Absalom and follow her name throughout the history of Israel and we will realize how the tool of emasculation influenced the very throne of Judah.
—The Spidery Roots from the Giants Surface —
The spidery unseen hidden roots of evil of the giants in Kirthjatharba: Anak, Arba, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai finally surface from furrowed ground in a most pleasing form, hundreds of years later, in a beautiful woman. Maachah (Maacah) was the daughter of the king of Geshur. She married Absalom (the son of a king, David). Absalom had a daughter by Maacah named after her mother. (For your information, Absalom also had a daughter named Tamar, and three sons. (2 Samuel 14:27) The Bible records that the three sons died (2 Samuel 18:18, but remains silent on the life of Tamar, Absalom’s daughter, except to say that she was a woman of a fair countenance). (2 Samuel 14:27)
Maachah — Absalom’s Daughter
We may feel that time quickly flies by, however, Satan is never in a hurry to implement his plan of corruption; hundreds of years in our time frame merely allows the workers and ministers of evil to hide behind a forgotten history. Most people place very little importance on history, and even less importance on biblical history. This daughter became a very powerful and influential force for years and years in the palaces of the kings of Judah. Maachah became the wife of Rehoboam (the son of Solomon). She was the mother of Rehoboam’s son Abijah, thus the mother of a king. It is recorded that Rehoboam loved her above all his other many wives. (2 Chronicles 11:21) Before I go on to the climax of this history, let us do a bit of a recap.
Maachah’s background from her mother’s side: Maachah was the great granddaughter of a king, Ammihud of Geshur (‘people of splendor and majesty’). She was the grand daughter of a king, Talmai of Geshur.
Maachah’s background from the side of her father Absalom. She was a grand daughter of a king (king David). She was the niece of a king, king Solomon. Her father-in-law was a king, king Solomon. She was the wife of a king, Rehoboam, Solomon’s son. She was the mother of a king, Abijah, the son of Rehoboam. And she was the mother of a king, Asa, the son of Abijah. And here is the kicker. She gave birth to Abijah and to Abijah’s son, Asa. She was not Asa’s grandmother, but she was Asa’s mother. (Your margin notes in your Bible may say ‘grandmother,’ but your margin notes are not inspired, as the maps in the back of your Bible are not inspired). Too many like to skirt around the incestuous actions that are recorded in Scripture, but God does not let mankind off the hook for their depravity and wickedness. The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. (Leviticus 18:7) Chapter 18 of the book of Leviticus is a condemnation of what mankind is capable of.
This one particular woman (Maachah) lived within a time span that she could quite possibly have been called in today’s description as a ‘beauty for the ages.’ I want to tie in the physical outward appearance of Maachah’s lineage with Absalom’s appearance. But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And [David] mourned for his son every day. (2 Samuel 13:37) After Absalom had his brother Amnon assassinated he fled to his mother’s family, the royal family of Geshur. The meaning of the name of Ammihud is ‘people of nobility,’ or ‘people of splendor, and majesty.’ It is recorded of Absalom in 2 Samuel 14:25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. Absalom married a princess of splendor and majesty, and he was the father of a woman of great beauty and regal bearing — Maachah.
There is so much more to be written about Maachah and Absalom, but I must try to stay focused on Giants in the Earth. The twisted tentacles of roots that originated with the giants in Kirjatharba under Arba, and Anak and Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai spread hundreds of years later into the very marble palaces of Solomon and his offspring through a beautiful woman named Maachah, the poster queen on high stakes pressure and emasculation.
And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel reigned Asa over Judah. (1 Kings 15:9)
And forty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom. (1 Kings 15:10)
And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father. (1 Kings 15:11)
And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. (1 Kings 15:12)
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron. (1 Kings 15:13)
She was a true child of the clan of Cain. Yes, the clan of Cain perished in the flood, but the genes of this evil clan were deeply buried in one of the eight who survived the destruction of the earth. Let me clarify this statement: there is none good on earth. No one is pure in the eyes of God for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Yes, Maachah was a true child of humanity, she may have had the genes of a cursed people, but she was the embodiment of what lies in all people: SIN.
Privilege and royalty was her inheritance, it was her place to rule, to control, and to be the active force behind and in front of the throne. She, like her father Absalom, was rebellious, and centered on power. She, like her mother’s people, was a giant and a titan of pressure and manipulation. All of this and beautiful too; however, in the eyes of God, He doesn’t see the beauty, He sees the grotesqueness in the monster of sin. God sees mankind as Gargoyles belching out their evil while perched on the pinnacles of power and religion leeringly seeking those whom they would devour. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8)
I write these things not to discourage, but to challenge and encourage the Christian to see the many threads in Scripture: the threads of evil, the threads of the workings and manipulations of Satan, and especially, the threads of God woven by God Himself to show us that in spite of the evil around He is in the midst. He is our Refuge, He is our Fellowship, He is our communion, and He is our Sanctuary. And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before [was] Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. (Judges 1:10) Notice in our study verse that even though the city of Arba, the city of four, existed within the territory of Judah, and the Canaanites (people from the tribe of the cursed son of Ham) lived in the place of fellowship and communion, they did not prevail because Judah fought against them and was victorious. Our Judah (our Praise) our Lord Jesus Christ has gone before us to overcome the Canaanites and the giants of evil who dwell in our land of fellowship and community. Our Judah, our Praise, our Messiah, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has prevailed through His death on the cross of Calvary.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (1 Corinthians 15:54)
O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? (1 Corinthians 15:55)
But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (Hebrews 2:14) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (Hebrews 2:15)
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith. (1 John 5:4)
Do not be intimidated by strange names. Speed reading has a purpose, but not when you are reading the Word of God. Every word — every name — every adjective —every phrase has an objective, a determined design in the teaching by the Spirit of God. The Bible is one book. It is united by the power of the Spirit of God. Do not allow anyone to remove what we call the Old Testament from your hands. The Word of God is One: the written Word is one, and the living Word is One.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Timothy 3:16) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:17)
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:4)
Our next study will be on the last mention of Kirjatharba found in a very unexpected scriptural location in the book of Nehemiah.
Amen
