The Sons of the Philistine Giant

The Holy Spirit of God is not through with the giants in the earth. We are about to learn about four more giants, their names, their family associations, and their deaths.

Anakims in

Gaza – Gath – Ashdod

There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. (Joshua 11:22)

   Although Joshua constantly fought against the Anakims (the giants) they found refuge in three cities and the areas surrounding these cities of Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. If you are politically aware of the history of Israel then, of course, you would recognize the area of Gaza, known today as the Gaza strip along the western coast of Israel on the Mediterranean Sea.

   The stone in the shoe of Israel has always been the generational hatred of Ishmael, the half brother of Isaac, the sons of Abraham. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred; (Ezekiel 25:15) God blessed Ishmael. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. (Genesis 17:20) However, the very next verse states the genesis of the generational hatred of those in the line of Ishmael, notice the very first word, But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (Genesis 17:21)

   Genesis Chapter 16, verse 12 sets the character of the children and nations that would come from Ishmael. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. Talk about prophecy . . . this is one prophecy that we (Jew and Gentile) have been living with for thousands of years. There is a wildness in the people of Ishmael, an untamable and an unreasonable mind set, fighting constantly against every man, and consequently (in never ending scenarios of skirmishes and conflict) while dwelling in close proximity they are a constant visible threat to those around. The character of Ishmael cannot change, and it will not change. Sadly, many today do not have a clear picture of history, and therefore, they are unable to see that deep hatred will allow neither assimilation nor civilized advancement.

Side Note: Have you notice that whenever an Ishmaelite terrorist strikes, the news propagandists always add this statement to their story, We do not yet know what their motive was?! Yes, we DO know what their motive was and is — it is HATRED! The old hatred is alive and extremely active!

   But do not despair, God is still on His throne, and nothing is outside His control and plan for mankind, and for His people, Israel. And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. (Genesis 17:19)

The Land of the Giants

   Back to the Giants in the Earth . . . the giants are now seen as not merely being in the earth, but being in the land in Joshua Chapter 11, verse 22. The land is always referred to in Scripture as the land of Israel. Although the Philistines controlled 5 cities during the age of David (Ashdod, Askelon, Ekron, Gaza, Gath) it was during the age of Joshua that we are referring to in this particular section to emphasize that these three cities were the main headquarters and refuge of the Anakims. There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. (Joshua 11:22) The giants took roots in three particular cities of Israel: Gaza – Gath – and Ashdod. And from these three cities the evil seed spread into more cities: Askelon, and Ekron.

Side Note: This sea coast area known today as the Gaza strip originally was possessed by Judah when God divided the land. And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families. (Joshua 15:12) The historical possessors of this particular territory could be a book unto itself. Historically, currently, prophetically, and symbolically this small strip of land (that separates Judah from the sea) has been used by Satan, his minions, his governments, and his haters of Israel as a field of battle for centuries upon centuries. Names have changed, blood lines have changed, leaders have changed, BUT one thing has not changed: the old hatred has not changed. (The people who currently possess this sea coast strip of land, who call themselves palestinians, is not a nation, and they are not refugees — they are professional refugees — meaning that is how many make their money by taking welfare from willfully blind nations, and although they possess the land of the Philistines of old, they are not the Philistines of old. They are not seeking to become a nation for the betterment of those who currently live there. They are united around their old hatred against Israel. They have one goal: annihilate the people of God: Israel. They are motivated by hatred: the old generational hatred.) The giants are still in this land today, they do not look monstrously large, however, they ARE monstrously large because the whole world has been (and is being) affected by their old hatred. Giants are shape shifters. They have reshaped their identity from warriors to victims. Swords are not their only weapons: bombs, propaganda, and fear are all instruments of destruction. Read this prophecy recorded in Zephaniah Chapter 2, verses 4 – 7.

For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up. (Zephaniah 2:4)

Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. (Zephaniah 2:5)

And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. (Zephaniah 2:6)

And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity. (Zephaniah 2:7)

The Giants of Gath

Sippai/Saph – Lahmi – Ishbibenob – Goliaththe unnamed giant

   Gaza means ‘she was strong.’ Gath means ‘a winepress’ and Ashdod has the meaning of ‘I will spoil.’ I will try to contain myself and focus only on Gath because this article is based on the giants born to the giant of Gath. Were there giants in other cities? of course there were. In fact, scripturally speaking, the giant clan of Cain spread into the world, for instance we find a giant of Egyptian nationality described in 1 Chronicles 11:23, for content read all of Chapter 11 of 1st Chronicles.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day. (1 Chronicles11:22)

And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear. (1 Chronicles11:23)

These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. (1 Chronicles11:24)

   This battle scene of Benaiah occurred during David’s campaign against the giants of the Philistines. If you dare to go to Chapter 11 of 1 Chronicles, you will understand how names are very important in aiding Bible students to get a grasp of biblical history. Also note that the description of this Egyptian giant is very similar to the description that follows in this article of the giants in Gath.

   Let us deal with Gath, the winepress, which denotes an activity of pressing or forcing the wine from the grapes by treading or pounding by foot. Scripture ties the winepress to judgment. There are 14 verses with the word ‘winepress,’ and this word is mentioned 15 times. (Isaiah 63:3) (Matthew 21:33) (Revelation 14:19, 20) (Revelation 19:15)

   The references to follow are color coded in order to simplify the names of the sons of the giant in Gath (as there are two different names for the same person), and also to emphasis the warrior who killed a giant. The name of the victorious warrior is in blue, and the name of the giant is in red. The location is color coded in green. Brown words have been selected to show the continuous battles — that there were many battles. The battle scenes are recorded from 1 Chronicles Chapter 20, verses 4 – 8, and 2 Samuel Chapter 21, verses 16 – 22. I did not include the confrontation between Goliath and David because it is the most famous of all battles, and I hope to write about it later. I am concerned now with the brothers of Goliath, and the men who slew them. Goliath was the first of the brothers to be slain. Now onward to the battles as described in 1 Chronicles Chapter 20 and in 2nd Samuel Chapter 21.

The Battles Recorded in 1 Chronicles Chapter 20

And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued. (1 Chronicles 20:4)

And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam. (1 Chronicles 20:5)

And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant. (1 Chronicles 20:6)

But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother slew him. (1 Chronicles 20:7)

These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants. (1 Chronicles 20:8)

The Battles Recorded in 2 Samuel Chapter 21

And Ishbibenob, which [was] of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear [weighed] three hundred [shekels] of brass in weight, he being girded with a new [sword], thought to have slain David. (2 Samuel 21:16)

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. (2 Samuel 21:17)

And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. (2 Samuel 21:18)

And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff o whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. (2 Samuel 21:19)

And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. (2 Samuel 21:20)

And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. (2 Samuel 21:21)

These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants. (2 Samuel 21:22)

   If you read carefully, you will see that there were many battles fought between David’s men against the Philistines and their mercenary giants from Gath. Gath was the royal city of the giants in this particular territory that we know as the Gaza strip. Also, if you are reading slowly, you will see that there is an unnamed giant. And the father of these giants is also not named at all in these sections of Scripture.

• Sibbechai killed Sippai also known as Saph

• Elhanan killed Lahmi

• Abishai killed Ishbibenob

• Jonathan killed unnamed giant

• David killed Golaith

   Why this emphasis on the names of the giants, and the men who killed them? Stay with me . . . let’s look at the giants: Sippai/Saph is one individual. How do I know? The meaning of these two names is the same. Both names mean ‘a basin, or bowl’ or ‘threshold’ or ‘my basins’ or ‘my bowls,’ or ‘my thresholds. Also notice that in 1st Chronicles the location of this event was in Gezer, and in 2nd Samuel it is described as in Gob. This was not two different geographical locations. Gezer was a distinct geographical city, the city of Gezer, which was located between Jericho and Jerusalem, centrally located in Israel and not near the Gaza and Gath area. During David’s campaign against the giants (which is recorded in 1st Chronicles and 2nd Samuel) took the Israelites into central Israel. Gezer means ‘a portion’ as in cutting off a piece. Gezer was an actual city, and is mentioned 12 times in Scripture.

   Now let’s look at Gob. The meaning of Gob is ‘a pit.’ Gob was never a city, but a description of the landscape: a pit. This is easy to understand as we have stone pits, quarry pits, open pit mining, and other types of excavation areas. The word ‘Gob’ is only used twice in Scripture, and in both places it is not a description of an actual city. Therefore, both of our Scriptures depict a battle in a pit in the city of Gezer. Big deal! Who cares? It is a big deal, and we should all care about the details that the Spirit of God meticulously places in His word.

   It was Sibbechai the Hushathite who slew Sippai/Saph. The primitive root of ‘Sibbechai’ is ‘to entwine’ as in a thicket, to fold together, and to wrap around. The tribal connection as a Hushathite I find very interesting because the name Hushathite connects to ‘to haste,’ as in being eager and excited as in enjoyment. Do you see a picture that the Spirit of God is beginning to paint with names? Agghhhh . . . . your bored? Wake up and let’s move on.

   Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath. Lahmi has the meaning of ‘my bread.’ Elhanan: ‘God is gracious’ or ‘God is a gracious giver,’ was the son of (Jair) ‘Enlightener,’ ‘he will enlighten,’ and in 1st Chronicles 20:5 ‘he will stir up’ slew ‘my bread.’

   Abishai the son of Zeruiah killed Ishbibenob. Unlike the other Israelite warriors, Abishai is mentioned 24 times in the Old Testament, and his brother was Joab. Those of you who are familiar with Scripture know who Joab was. ‘The father of a gift,’ or ‘father of gifts’ describes Abishai through the meaning of his name: a gracious giver. However, Abishai’s mother Zeruiah is extremely interesting in tracing the meaning of her name. ‘Wounded,’ or ‘to crack’ (as by pressure), or ‘pierce ye Jah,’ and ‘to leak,’ but ‘wounded’ is quite appropriate. The giant who ‘the father of gifts’ destroyed was Ishbibenob, ‘my dwelling is at Nob,’ the dwelling root of this name insinuates ‘to sit as in judging,’ or ‘to sit quietly as in an ambush.’ Nob was a city of priests and it was here where treachery was committed by David’s enemies. When you understand what occurred at Nob then the dual meaning of Nob’s name opens up a better grasp of the spiritual war between good and evil. Nob means ‘fruitful,’ and /or ‘empty.’ With the indwelling of the Spirit of God the result is fruit for God, and without the Spirit of God then man becomes an empty soul. I suggest you read 1st Samuel Chapter 22.

   Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew a man of great stature, and he also was born to the giant. The unnamed giant was the loser in the fight with  Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David. There were four Jonathan’s mentioned in the Old Testament. This Jonathan was the nephew of David. Shimea’s name means ‘my report.’ ‘Jehovah-give,’ or ‘Jehovah is given’ is the meaning of the name of Jonathan.

   These Israelite warriors and the men who they battled against are noted in the scriptures above, however, the magnificent heroic confrontation between Goliath and the young David had already occurred. I will write about this in the next article, God willing. Remember that David took five smooth stones when he went face to face against this giant Goliath. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. (1 Samuel 17:40) David had to be aware that Goliath had four brothers. Five stones, not four, not six, but five stones. Think on this: the confidence that David had in his God, Jehovah; the deep-rooted belief and faith that God could and would deliver him out of all his troubles. Five stones. Five giants.

    But, for now, let us return to the four brothers of Goliath. Nothing in Scripture is superfluous; therefore, there is a message and even many messages in the names within the battles between the followers of David and their enemies, the giants in the land. How beautiful are the types of Christ, the King, and His followers; the depth of these types goes beyond human invention, and consequently, we see the hand that moves the pen of the ready writer in the Holy Spirit of God through the scroll of time: Scripture.

   The followers of David had an inner quality of strength, fortitude, and warfare experience placed within them by the Holy Spirit of God. As we of faith today are encouraged to fight the good fight, to hone our spiritual weapons into sharp edges, we are clearly at war with the forces of evil: political giants, activists’ giants, financial giants, giants in academia, giants of technology, giants of propaganda, giants who set the staging, giants who clean up the evidence of their presence, giants of religion once hiding in the shadows, but now openly showing themselves as the enemies of God by denying the Word of God and the power of God. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:15)

Our Battle with the Giants

   I do not want to get distracted by what I am about to write, but it is needful at this point. I write to the Christian: do not allow your weapons to rust, focus on who our enemies really are; yes, we are still part of this earth in as much as occupations, social interactions, family responsibilities, and national interests; however, one of the battles that the giants lure us into is to spend more time in earthly Gob (pits) than on the spiritual fine tuning of our strengths. It is here in the Word of God, in prayer, in understanding of the knowledge of the holy (our strengths) that battles are won. Our Nob, the place where we dwell can be either empty or fruitful. This totally depends on how you understand your strength, and who your strength comes from. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:5) By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, (2 Corinthians 6:7) Spending time in a churchy setting a few hours one day a week is NOT honing your weapon. Faux fellowship, a social activity driven agenda, and Bible teaching through a sieve produces a nursery full of drowsy basinet slumberers. We are in a war, a war for souls, a war pitted against faith, a war against YOUR faith, a war against our God and Savior, Jesus Christ. (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) (2 Corinthians 10:4) Begin by praying that God would allow you to interact with one person each and every day when you are out in the world. A smile, a kind comment can lead to many good interactions with a soul.

Our Weapons Against the Giants

   Our weapons are NOT swords. Allow God to win the battle for you by using the following weapons that we do not treat as weapons: truth, righteousness, faith, prayer, supplication, and the Word of God. Weapons need to always be kept at hand, or in our hand. Weapons need to be sharp, and smooth by honing (through use, experience, and knowledge of the holy). Weapons should be familiar and comfortable in our hands, and in our minds and hearts. Weapons should be respected. And only weapons made by the best material and standards should be used, using substandard Bible translations is a cracked weapon. Please note that we only use the King James Bible.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; (Ephesians 6:14)

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; (Ephesians 6:15)

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16)

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Ephesians 6:18)

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. (1st Thessalonians 5:8)

The Warriors of the King vs The Seeds of Evil

The Giant of the Seed of Evil – The Giant Sippai/Saph

Sibbechai the Hushathite versus Sippai/Saph

   As Sibbechai the Hushathite who slew Sippai/Saph, we are eager, and excited with joy that God has wrapped us with His strength and power. He has entwined us with Himself. We are part of His divine nature. (2nd Peter 1:4) The King of Israel and the King of nations, has given to us Himself dwelling within us. How much more can we become entwined together with the God of creation than this name of Entwined — Sibbechai. We are united together with God our Father through the Lord Jesus Christ. United with God, entwined in His Being, how great is that!

Sippai/Saph: Both names mean ‘a basin, or bowl’ or ‘threshold’ or ‘my basins’ or ‘my bowls,’ or ‘my thresholds.’

   As Entwined slew Sippai/Saph, we, as conquerors, can also overcome ‘my threshold,’ and ‘my basins’ This giant of two names can be stopped at the threshold — he can be stopped dead from entering into our lives and into our homes by the power of the Spirit of God indwelling within all Christians. When Christians allow the Spirit of God to rule in their homes, and to fill their vessels ‘basins’ with Himself the giants at the threshold with empty basins are defeated. There are many messages in the Entwined with God defeating the vessels (basins) of wrath.

[What] if God, willing to shew [his] wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: (Romans 9:22) And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, (Romans 9:23)

Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. (Hebrews 9:21)

But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: (Acts 9:15)

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, [and] prepared unto every good work. (2 Timothy 2:21)

   Sippai/Saph: Both names mean ‘a basin, or bowl’ or ‘threshold’ or ‘my basins’ or ‘my bowls,’ or ‘my thresholds.’ Meditating on what God the Holy Spirit teaches us through names, He brings to mind a verse in Genesis when Jehovah spoke a warning to Cain that and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. (Genesis 4:7) A threshold sets before us a picture of one standing outside, and another standing within. A threshold as it relates to the giants in the land, and the evil seed, is that the giants are ALWAYS at our threshold eagerly anticipating that we through our carelessness, lack of comprehension, and our sin will invite the giants into our homes and our lives. With basins filled with enticements disguised as entertainment, opportunities, self promotions and thoughts that remove us from our weapons and strengths, these gift giving giants cross over our threshold and advance their conquering battle plan.

   How can we (the warriors of the King, the Lord Jesus Christ) overcome the Sippai’s and Saph’s of this world? Christians need to become aware that they are so entwined with their God and Savior that nothing can untangle them or remove them from the power of God. Nothing can separate Christians from their God and Savior — nothing and no one.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (Romans 8:35)

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. (Romans 8:36)

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (Romans 8:37)

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (Romans 8:38)

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:39)

The Giant of the Seed of Evil – The Giant Lahmi

Elhanan the son of Jair versus Lahmi

   Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath. Lahmi has the meaning of ‘my bread.’ The meaning of the name of Elhanan is ‘God is gracious’ or ‘God is a gracious giver,’ and he was the son of Jair ‘Enlightener,’ or ‘he will enlighten.’ I see in Lahmi the pride of life in ‘my bread.’ The very first mention of ‘bread’ is recorded in Genesis 3:19, when God pronounced that man would only supply his survival needs through toil and sweat. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return. (Genesis 3:19) The first mention of any word or phrase in Scripture sets the definition or meaning of the majority of references that follow. This is often referred to as ‘the law of first mention.’ In the Old Testament the first mention of the word ‘bread’ is associated with the curse upon Adam that because of his sin and rebellion against His Creator he would vigorously labor to survive, death would be his end, and as he began from dust he would end as dust. The last mention of the word ‘bread’ in the Old Testament is found in Malachi Chapter 1, verse 7, Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. There is so much that can be drawn from this one verse, however, I will stay focused on only one phrase ‘polluted bread.’ Everything that man touches he pollutes. Even that which he offers to God is polluted because mankind places himself above all that God has commanded and established. Mankind attempts to take credit for all that comes from God even his daily bread. The Cain syndrome is essentially seen in man placing his accomplishments and achievements as worth something to a righteous and holy God. Cain would force his approach to God in the manner that Cain deemed fit, not what God required, but what man determined that God should accept. The giant, Lahmi, represents this entitlement that mankind is basing his eternal existence on, ‘MY bread.’ Lahmi ‘my bread’ — my efforts — my goodness — my religion — my works — MY — ME — MINE — the Lahmi’s of this world live by the meaning of the name of Lahmi. Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. (1 John 3:12) What God thinks about man’s work can be stated in one word — EVIL!

  The giant Lahmi was destroyed by Elhanan the son of Jair. This is how we can overcome those who are of the giants of Lahmi when they attack us in their attempt to deny that salvation is a gift of God through faith and not by works. The Lahmi’s of the evil seed can neither separate nor remove us (Christians) from the knowledge of the holy in His plan of salvation.

The meaning of the name of Elhanan is ‘God is gracious’ or ‘God is a gracious giver,’ and he was the son of Jair ‘Enlightener,’ or ‘he will enlighten.’

   God is gracious and God is a gracious giver. God gave ALL that He is to the world through Himself in the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ was the gift given to ALL, but only those who have been enlightened receive the inheritance of saints. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. (Ephesians 1:18) The Son of God is the gift of God through faith. The Son of God is not only the bread from heaven, but He is the Light that proceeded from the Father of lights. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17) Refusing to believe Christ and the word of God, the Lahmi’s attack Christ as the only way to approach God; therefore, these giants (once they are recognized for what they are) can be destroyed by being strong in the Word of God to denounce the works of self-righteousness, the works of religion, the works of self to achieve a false sense of spiritual superiority.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: (Ephesians 2:8) Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:9)

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (Titus 3:5)

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, (2 Timothy 1:9)

The Giant of the Seed of Evil – The Giant Ishbibenob

Abishai the son of Zeruiah versus Ishbibenob

   How can the giant of Ishbibenob be destroyed? First, we must see him for what he really is. Remember that the name of this giant has a dual meaning. His name is connected to where he lives ‘to sit as in judging,’ or ‘to sit quietly as in an ambush.’ This giant uses the legalism of religious traditions to ambush the unsuspecting. And his name is also rooted in his actions ‘fruitful,’ and / or ‘empty.’ You may think that I have this backwards, in that his actions are ‘to sit as in judging,’ or ‘to sit quietly as in an ambush,’ and he lives in being ‘fruitful,’ and / or ‘empty.’ But, this giant dwells in hypocrisies and in contradictions while quietly waiting to attack the unprepared victim. The other meaning of Ishbibenob’s name ‘fruitful,’ and / or ‘empty’ reinforces his dwelling place. How does all this relate to our conflicts with the giants of our age? Christianity is constantly attacked by those who sit in judgment against those who follow the Word of God. Our giants attack the credibility of the Word of God. Our giants attack the validity of the Word of God. ‘Yea, hath God said,’ (Genesis 3:1) Our giants lie about the consequences of sin to the unsaved world. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: (Genesis 3:4) Our giants lure the blinded into their greatest lie ever spoken to mankind, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (Genesis 3:5)

    Here we are today (2019) still believing that we are gods and that we can change history — that we can change the climate and the wind cycles — that we can change XY and XX — that we can change man’s propensity to sin, and that we can control the future — yes, we know good and evil, but we are unable to discern the difference between good and evil. Our adversarial giants are very good at judging and at ambushing the unprepared in the Word of God.

   Let us consider the other name of Ishbibenob ‘fruitful,’ and / or ‘empty.’ At first glance this may appear to be a contradiction, but it all depends on what is fruitful in the land of giants. Fruitful to an enemy of God is different from fruitful for a child of God. There are different types of fruit. Two different products of lives lived in either giant territory or Christian territory. Primarily the enemy is fruitful when he can continue his influence and control over the unsaved soul; however, these fruits are rotten and they smell. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them]. (Ephesians 5:11) Our enemies seem to be ‘fruitful’ with the things of the world, but they are ‘empty’ of soul.

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (Matthew 7:16)

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. (Matthew 7:20) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (Matthew 7:22)

ROTTEN FRUIT – The Food of Giants

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (Galatians 5:19)

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, (Galatians 5:20)

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:21)

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:10)

WASHED FRUIT – The Christian – The Kings Warriors

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11)

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (Galatians 5:22)

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:23)

   Abishai the son of Zeruiah killed Ishbibenob. Unlike the other Israelite warriors, Abishai is mentioned 24 times in the Old Testament, and his brother was Joab. The three sons of Zeruiah (David’s sister – 2 Samuel 17:23; 1 Chronicles 2:15, 16) were warriors of not only great strength and aptitude, but they had fierce warlike personalities. Since the name of Zeruiah is mostly connected to her sons in all of the references, I am thinking that she had a very forceful and hardened personality because her sons replicated these character traits. As David in 2 Samuel 3:39, and in 2 Samuel 19:22 is recorded to have said, And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. (2 Samuel 3:39)

Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. (2 Samuel 16:9) And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? (2 Samuel 16:10)

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed? (2 Samuel 19:21)

And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel? (2 Samuel 19:22)

  ‘The father of a gift,’ or ‘father of gifts’ describes Abishai through the meaning of his name: a gracious giver. However, Abishai’s mother Zeruiah is extremely interesting; in tracing the meaning of Zeruiah’s name we discover that it is ‘wounded,’ or ‘to crack’ (as by pressure), and ‘to leak,’ but ‘wounded’ is quite appropriate. Do you not see the message? It is in this verse And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: (Ephesians 2:2)

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (Ephesians 4:22)

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (Ephesians 5:8)

For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. (Titus 3:3)

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:22)

   Let us attempt to summarize Abishai the son of Zeruiah versus Ishbibenob. I believe that the emphasis here should not be totally placed on the giants that we battle, but we (the warriors of our King, Christ Jesus) should understand not only the battle plan, but to understand (that as warriors) we have the responsibility to uphold Him in all things, yes, even in our daily jousting with our adversaries. Whenever we place our understanding, and our thoughts above those of our King we undue the work that He has set us to accomplish. Herein we see Zeruiah in us placing self above the glory of our Lord, Savior, and King. It is quite notable that the Spirit of God gives this concept in the woman, the mother of fighters, hardened without compassion. The battle between Abishai the son of Zeruiah versus Ishbibenob takes us back to the first battle in Eden and lays the capitulation for the first battle squarely on the actions of our mother Eve. The ‘wounded’ woman, or ‘cracked under pressure’ takes us back to our earthly Adamic mother Eve. Here in the perfect environment, Eden, Adam (because he was the Federal Head) was charged with the responsibility of maintaining God’s will, order and purpose, and because he failed to do so, God then placed this failure on Adam’s shoulders; however, it was the woman who first ‘cracked under pressure’ when she was confronted by the giant of sin (Satan). The female became the first ‘wounded’ in the battle. She was duped, tricked, deceived, hoodwinked, snookered, bamboozled and forever ‘wounded.’ Adam knew, but Eve was deceived! Thank you, Eve, for all the problems that women have had throughout time is because of YOU! And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. (1 Timothy 2:14)

   What is the lesson or message for us in our current battle? Although Zeruiah’s children fought to put David on the throne of Israel, they fought without understanding that the battle they fought wasn’t about them. They had a greater purpose that in all things they should keep David’s honor intact. Christians are aware that God’s honor must always be first. All actions should represent the interests of God and should reflect the mind of Christ. God’s Christ must always have Center stage. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (Colossians 1:18)    Have you noticed that the battle lines have changed in that today, this very hour, men and women of reprobate minds and hearts are trying to tell Christians what Christians should say and what Christians should believe? The giants are attempting to redefine Christianity. The giants are changing the definition and meaning of what a true Christian is all about.

   Protect yourselves from being wounded, do not become hardened as Zeruiah and her sons, stay firm and strong in battle while always knowing that God is in control. Sometimes, it appears to be a fine line between the battle and reverence for our God. Using the world’s weapons does not honor God. Monetarily supporting the giants is not honoring to God. A testimony based on works, giant slaying, and building contrary to God’s word, is not honoring to God. Being a warrior isn’t enough. Abishai and his two other brothers were notable men of valor, but valor without the knowledge of the holy is meaningless and brings dishonor to their leader, as it brought dishonor to David. And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel? (2 Samuel 19:22) Joab and Abishai slew Abner against David’s knowledge, and contrary to David’s wishes and directives. (Read 2 Samuel Chapter 3) This treachery against Abner stained David as having a previous knowledge to Abner’s murder. These two brothers (Joab and Abishai) committed murder because of a personal vendetta against Abner. They never once stopped to consider what David wanted. They never once thought about the wishes of their leader (David) or the consequences that David may have to face in rebuilding the nation of Israel. This is very much like the giants that exist within Christendom who refer to themselves as Christians while acting as agents of Satan. Even true Christians too many times act out against God and His Christ while proclaiming faith and grace. Scripture informs us of this dishonor in 2 Timothy 2:20.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (2 Timothy 2:19)

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour,  and some to dishonour. (2 Timothy 2:20)

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. (2 Timothy 2:21)

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22)

   For the Christian fighting the giants is enough for anyone, but when one has to deal with the treachery and dishonor from within that is a blow too low. Abishai is a reminder that being a warrior based on personal advantage is not honoring to God. We are warriors based on the rules of engagement set by our Lord and Savior.

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but [we do] all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying. (2 Corinthians 12:19)

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13)

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17)

   How to defeat the Ishbibenob’s? As Abishai was ‘the father of a gift,’ or ‘father of gifts’ we defeat our Ishbibenob’s by being obedient and faithful to the Gift of God, Jesus Christ. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17) Yes, obedience and faithfulness are weapons. We not only have dwelling within us (Christians) the Gift of God in Jesus Christ, but we have the Giver also dwelling within us, the Father of lights. Know the power of God, know the power within the word of God, know the power of the Spirit of God that dwells within you. It is said that ‘knowledge is power,’ this is very true, for the knowledge of the holy is power. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10) Want power to overcome when you come against the adversary? The knowledge of the holy is power! He giveth power to the faint; and to [them that have] no might he increaseth strength. (Isaiah 40:29) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:13)

   How can we defeat the Ishbibenob’s? Use the weapons of the power of the knowledge of the holy, use the weapons of obedience and faithfulness, use the weapons of the indwelling Spirit of God while honoring and reverencing the Gift of God, and the Giver of the Gift. The giants, which we face, hate and fear to hear about the knowledge of God and His Word; they hate and fear the obedience and faithfulness that we display; they hate and fear when God and His Son is honored and reverenced; they hate and fear hearing about the Gift of God and the Giver of the Gift. We have power — use it!

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. (Isaiah 40:29)

 

The Giant of the Seed of Evil – The Unnamed Giant of Great Stature

Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David versus a man of great stature

   David’s warrior in 2nd Samuel 21:22, and in 1st Chronicles 20:7 was David’s nephew: a blood relative, the son of David’s brother Shimea. The meaning of Shimea is ‘my report.’ The name of Jonathan means ‘Jehovah is giver,’ or/and ‘God given.’  These names were not selected by these men to honor pop stars. These names reveal the heart of men. And the Revealer is God the Holy Spirit; therefore ‘My Report’ chose to call his son ‘God is Giver.’ I would say that this is quite a report because Shimea personally knew that all things come from the ultimate and divine Giver: Jehovah. This is our strength. Our report should be that God is Giver. Our report is the gospel of Christ. Our strength and power originate from the power of God in the preaching of the cross. We are to continue to preach, teach, exhort, and pray — for it is the power of God through the working of the Spirit of God who saves.

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? (Isaiah 53:1)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17)

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? (Romans 10:16)

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. (Romans 1:18)

   Whom did Jonathan destroy? Read the description documented in 1st Chronicles and in 2nd Samuel, and key in on what the Spirit of God is revealing to us (I have color coded the sections in red that I believe broadens our understanding). This will add to your understanding of why this particular giant was not named.

And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant. (1 Chronicles 20:6)

But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother slew him. (1 Chronicles 20:7)

And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. (2 Samuel 21:20)

And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. (2 Samuel 21:21)

   First, note that this giant was a man of great stature. Remember we are attempting to understand why this giant is not named. He had a name, but it is not revealed. Why not? Stature is not only defined by height, but it also can be defined as status, a high position in society. This particular giant represents ALL the giants that we face every day, which is why the Spirit of God did not give him a name. He is the embodiment of all giants: he is nameless because he is Adam (man). This giant is mankind. Six fingers on each hand, six toes on each foot — 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 — is a spiritual lesson for us. The Spirit of God wraps this number of six with the number four. Baby math again in that the number four speaks of the world — mankind became spiritually deformed by sin as Cain became physically deformed by his sin against his brother (Abel) and against God. Six, the number of man, the natural man, the man OF the world, the man IN the world, and the man FOR the world. This giant of no name is ALL mankind without Christ, and ALL mankind outside of salvation. His work (the six fingers on his hand) is devoted entirely to the things of the physical world. His walk (the six toes on his foot) is propelled by his desires to achieve greatness for himself. This is ALL mankind. You cannot put a name on THIS giant because he is every living, breathing, walking and working person alive outside of God and His Christ.

   For the Christian — we battle this giant in every unsaved person we meet. AND we battle this giant within us. We fight daily against the man within, and the man without. He can be named Greed, Pride, Covetousness, Foolishness, and Sin. How did ‘Jehovah is Giver’ (Jonathan) defeat this nameless giant? He defeated and killed his adversary by remembering his father, My Report. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? (Isaiah 53:1) What is OUR report? It is the message of the gospel!

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17)

   This article, part xiii of Giants in the Earth, is far from being completed. We have yet to deal with David and Goliath, and the unnamed father of the five giants of Gath, and the giants that surrounds every Christian daily, and the head chief giant. I pray that you will have found something in these articles, and in THIS article, to chew on and to consider in your battle.

The following references have been selected from the Old Testament, and even though these words were directed to Israel they can also be applied and appreciated by those in our age.

And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat,

Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s . (2 Chronicles 20:15)

And all this assembly shall know

that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S,

and he will give you into our hands. (1 Samuel 17:47)

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying,

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

(Zechariah 4:6)
