The Coat – Part 4 – The Little Coat and the DOUBLE CALL –

The Coat
Part 4

—– The Little Coat —–

Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. (1st Samuel 2:19)

—– The Little Coat—–
and
THE DOUBLE CALL

If you ignore the previous three articles on the coat then move on . . . do NOT read this article. That is good advice since what God the Spirit will teach us in this article is based on previous principles and precepts . . . and as a Christian you should already be aware of the importance of progressive revelation and how the Spirit of God uses The Law of First Mention, numerical placement, and structural patterns to develop spiritual themes within His written word.
This study of the word coat will take us from the heavenly realm to the earthly realm and through the Old Testament and into the New Testament.

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. (Isaiah 28:9) For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: (Isaiah 28:10)

This current post, Part 4, continues the study of the word COAT in Scripture. The study of the word COAT has so far drawn us into biblical history beginning with Joseph’s coat of many colors to the Levitical priesthood and now to 1st Samuel Chapter 2, verse 19, Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. One little verse about a little coat for a little boy. I am very anxious to discover what the Holy Spirit has for us in this little coat.
This is the time to tell you to read the 2nd Chapter of 1st Samuel. The name Samuel means ‘his name is of God,’ and/or ‘heard of God.’ Samuel was one of four people in the Old Testament who heard the DOUBLE CALL of God: Abraham, Moses, Israel/Jacob; and Samuel. In the New Testament we have one man who heard the DOUBLE CALL of God, therefore through Saul/Paul there were a total of five men who heard the DOUBLE CALL of God. AND with the DOUBLE CALL we also have the heart felt reply, Here [am] IMoses and Jacob ALL replied Here [am] I. In the little boy Samuel, we have his reply to the DOUBLE CALL of God, Speak; for thy servant heareth. Every time I read the DOUBLE CALL of God and their humble reply of, Here [am] I, I am deeply moved by each momentous event. Each DOUBLE CALL signified a specific unique work was about to be required from each individual. The DOUBLE CALL of God is not to be lightly taken.

1. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I. (Genesis 22:11)
2. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here [am] I. (Genesis 46:2)
3. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I. (Exodus 3:4)
4. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. (1st Samuel 3:10)

As you read through 1st Samuel 3:1 you will discover that God called Samuel THREE times . . . it was Samuel, Samuel . . . THREE times God called, Samuel, Samuel. However, twice Samuel thought that the voice of the double call came from a person, the priest Eli. The documentation of this historic call from God to a little boy never ceases to thrill. A child was called by God NOT KNOWING GOD nor the word of God, nevertheless, that child was forever SEALED with the power of God’s Holy Spirit. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. (1st Samuel 3:7) As this little boy grew from child to man, the words of God strengthened him, and thus this little boy was later ESTABLISHED to serve God as His prophet on earth.

And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. (1st Samuel 3:19)
And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel [was] established [to be] a prophet of the LORD. (1st Samuel 3:20)
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. (1st Samuel 3:21)

The little boy was not immediately ESTABLISHED as a prophet of God, for there is NO such concept or scriptural principle as a ‘prophet prodigy’ in Scripture. There have been many prodigies in music and in other skills in the world, BUT prophet prodigies and priest prodigies and biblical scholar prodigies is a fallacy. There have been many gifted children who have been exploited to strut across the religious stage while mouthing and quoting Scripture as their mentors, parents and followers prided themselves in their offspring. To be a Christian is to receive a REVELATION from God, it is REGENERATION by the Holy Spirit of God, and therefore a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with God IN Jesus Christ is the result. It is God who GIVES the gift of FAITH. The birth of a new creation, the new birth, being born again cannot be acquired through skill, it is also NEITHER a garment nor a coat that can be put on or taken off at will through scriptural knowledge. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. (1st Samuel 3:7)
First there is REVELATION . . . And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. (1st Samuel 3:21) Twice the Holy Spirit notes that it was in SHILOH that God revealed Himself to Samuel. Shiloh was the place where the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle of God was first placed after the people crossed over the Jordan river into the land. But go ye now unto my place which [was] in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. (Jeremiah 7:12) And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them. (Joshua 18:1) The word Shiloh means ‘The desired, the longed for One,’ and ‘Prince of Peace.’ It also means ‘the peace-bringer,‘ or ‘the bringer of prosperity.‘ The Holy Spirit is clear that the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel. By what means did the LORD appear to this child Samuel or how did the LORD appear to Samuel? Again, the Holy Spirit is clear . . . it was IN Shiloh BY the word of the LORD. It was in ‘The desired, the longed for One, the Prince of Peace, ‘the peace-bringer,’ or ‘the bringer of prosperityBY the word of the LORD. Who is the WORD of the LORD? The Lord Jesus Christ is the Living Word of God. God had APPEARED many times BEFORE in Shiloh to others. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. This is not about the written word of God or the Pentateuch, this is speaking of the LIVING WORD of God, the visible manifestation of the invisible God. The REVEALER REVEALED HIMSELF to the child Samuel. FAITH was never limited to those in the age of the New Testament. Through the book of Hebrews, Chapter 11 in 15 verses, the phrase ‘by FAITH‘ is recorded sixteen times speaking of those who lived during the age of the Old Testament ‘by FAITH.’

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3)
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

The child Samuel BELIEVED GOD by FAITH, and God was pleased and established him as a prophet of the LORD. (1st Samuel 3:20) And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. (1st Samuel 3:19) May ALL who are alive today IN Christ let none of his words fall to the ground.
The example that God the Holy Spirit presents in the little boy Samuel, is not about a child with excellent abilities beyond the norm, but it is about a little child who was called by God to serve God in a future roll. Samuel’s call is not about what some Christians today call ‘walking the aisle,’ or ‘a coming to Jesus moment.’ Samuel was called by GOD to SERVE GOD and His purposes. TIME and the exercise of FAITH are the elements within faith to faith. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17) GROWING in grace also takes in the elements of time and faith. But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2nd Peter 3:18) GROWING in the KNOWLEDGE of the Lord Jesus Christ also takes in the element of time, the exercise of FAITH and the realization of the reality of the GRACE of God. A child can certainly be born again and as a child serve God through faith and obedience BUT and there is a BUT as with ALL Christians of ALL ages as new born again ones, that AFTER the new birth there should be a time to GROW, a time of GROWING from faith to faith, a time of GROWING in and through the GRACE of God . . . that is experiencing God’s GRACE through numerous trails of tearful trials. Again, let me repeat THERE IS NO SUCH THING in the spiritual process as a prophet prodigy or a priest prodigy.

The SONSHIP of the Lord Jesus Christ is not based on His physical appearance on the earth, but it is based on His position as SON OF GOD in the heavenly sphere.

Christ as a child of twelve years old (Luke 2:42) was in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. (Luke 2:46) And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. (Luke 2:47) Although Christ was the visible presence of the invisible God, He was subject to his earthly care givers. (Luke 2:51) He was that HOLY THING (Luke 1:35) in the womb of Mary (HE was not made HOLY because of her womb for HE was HOLY BEFORE the womb), He was the HOLY CHILD JESUS (Acts 4:27, 30) and He was that HOLY ONE (Mark 1:24). Being THAT HOLY THING in Mary’s womb did not make Him less GOD since He could not be visibly seen and being THAT HOLY CHILD during His time period of physical growth did not make Him less GOD because of HIS height and appearance. The SONSHIP of the Lord Jesus Christ is not based on His physical appearance on the earth, but it is based on His position as SON OF GOD in the heavenly sphere. Luke 2:40 describes the time period from babe to infancy to childhood where HE was filled with wisdom. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. The time period in Luke 2:52 takes us from child to the age of responsibility where He is described NOT as a child but as Jesus. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Did it occur to you that it is one thing to be filled with wisdom and another thing to be increased IN wisdom?

Side Note: Wisdom. Proverbs Chapter 8 and the 28th Chapter of Job can be considered as the ‘Wisdom Chapters.’ Scripture calls the Lord Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: (Luke 11:49) The wisdom of God said . . . Therefore also said the wisdom of God. Wisdom is a Person.
But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. (1st Corinthians 1:24)
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: (1st Corinthians 1:30)
That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; (Colossians 2:2) In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3) ◆ End of Side Note – Wisdom.

Since the invisible GOD IS WISDOM, so also Christ as the visible GOD IS WISDOM. God, as the young child Christ Jesus, was FILLED WITH WISDOM, and as Christ Jesus grew His USE of wisdom increased. It is one thing to have wisdom, and it is another thing to use wisdom. The physical growth period that the Lord Jesus Christ experienced takes in His interactions with His created beings. His first documented interactions with man is recorded in Chapter 2 of the book of Luke. Where did the young twelve-year-old Jesus go in Jerusalem? He went to the place of priestly service, the temple. Although the temple at that time was corrupt, nevertheless, His first appearance at the temple disclosed the moral and physical corruption was rooted in spiritual corruption, and for THREE days in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions, Christ, as Melchisedec, listened, asked questions, responded and answered questions of doctrine. How do we know this? These were doctors of the law without understanding of the things of The Law . . . And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. Therefore since they were doctors of the Law their interest, of course, would be around the things of the Law: the need of the Law of God, the content of the Law: the law of the burnt offering, the meat offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, the peace offering, the law of the leper, the law of the Nazarite, and there in their very midst WAS ALL of the offerings . . . Christ was the Perfect Nazarite. He was the embodiment and the fulfillment of the Law itself and through the numbers of three (3) days and the number of His age (12) we have the UNSEEN message that Christ’s ministry would last for three years directed specifically first to the Jew, to Israel and to the twelve tribes.

These doctors of the law were rulers of the Jews, supposed masters in Israel in The Law, and yet as with timid Nicodemus of  the night in John Chapter 3 (approximately eighteen years later) these doctors knew little about Jehovah, and nothing about that twelve year old seating in their midst with understanding far beyond their comprehension and yet, NONE asked, Who art thou? That was one question that was asked only once of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then said they (the Pharisees and the Jews who had gathered in the temple) unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. (John 8:25)

When God interacted with Adam and Eve it was in the position as their Creator God. When God interacted with mankind as the Man Jesus it was in the position of SONSHIP, and because of SONSHIP He was SUBJECT to God as His Father.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49)
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. (John 16:28)
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God. (John 20:17)

Although the Lord Jesus Christ WAS GOD (and IS GOD) when He was in HIS earthly Body, He learned things that as the MAN GOD He had never personally experienced before. HE LEARNED obedience, HE LEARNED suffering and HE LEARNED physical pain, HE LEARNED humiliation, and HE LEARNED death.

Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; (Hebrews 5:8)
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:8) Christ was NOT a man as Adam, but He was seen in the fashion and form as a man.

—–The Little Coat—–
and
THE CALLER, the DOUBLE CALL
and the PROPHET

Through our study of the word coat we have learned that the use of the word coat disclosed spiritual progressive revelation. What is progressive revelation? Progressive revelation is simply this: God ADDS more to the first mention of any word, phrase or spiritual concept in order to teach His faithful the basics of biblical understanding and inspiration. The seeker of truth will find additional information that was not first revealed at the first mention of a word, phrase or concept. This additional information is NOT CONTRARY nor in opposition to God’s doctrine but it is FRESH and COMPLEMENTARY facts.
The first mention of coat and the coat of many colors’ deals with HEIRSHIP and SONSHIP, INHERITANCE, PRIESTHOOD, RELATIONSHIP, and BLOODLINE. Now after all of that, the Holy Spirit of God presents another fresh understanding of the word coat: the PROPHET.
We will not follow the thread of the subject of a prophet. There were many prophets in Scripture beginning with the first mention of the word prophet in Genesis 20:7. However, before Abraham there were prophets who were not documented in Scripture as prophets. For instance, the first prophet was Enoch.  CLICK HERE and HERE   for more about Enoch.

By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. (Hebrews 11:5)
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, (Jude 1:14)
To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. (Jude 1:15)

The documentation that Enoch prophesied was held from readers until the next to the last book in the Bible: Jude 1:14. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints.
Consider this: 1. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I. (Genesis 22:11) The DOUBLE CALL of the PROPHET: Abraham, was the prophet of those of FAITH in both the New Testament AND of the Old Testament. Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all. (Romans 4:16) Although great promises were given to Abraham by God, in the DOUBLE CALL to Israel/Jacob we have the divine prophesy given of a great nation to come. 2. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here [am] I. (Genesis 46:2) And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: (Genesis 46:3). Also, in the DOUBLE CALL to Israel/Jacob notice how the Holy Spirit develops His work of the new birth. In the visions of the night, God spoke to ISRAEL (Prince with God) and yet God called out the name of Jacob (the Supplanter). From ‘Supplanter‘ to ‘Prince with God,’ this is how God sees Israel. The DOUBLE CALL went out to the ‘Supplanter.’ Here was the evidence of the divine call of God to those who usurp God’s order and God’s purpose through the original ‘supplanter’ Lucifer. Jacob, the Supplanter’ represents (through his name) the natural man, the man of the world. From ‘Supplanter‘ to ‘Prince with God‘ was not only meant for those of FAITH in the Old Testament, but it speaks of ALL those of FAITH throughout the time span of mankind.

The DOUBLE CALL of Israel/Jacob was introduced through the prophesy of the promise of NOT only a great nation yet to come, but it also included the prophesy of a change in how the twelve tribes of Israel would be accepted by God. Here is God’s promise of an ADDITION (a progressive revelation) in His plan of INHERITANCE,

And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. (Genesis 48:5)
And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. (Genesis 48:6)
And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. (Genesis 48:19)
And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. (Genesis 48:20)
Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow. (Genesis 48:22)

Through the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ in Chapter 7, verses 6- 9 we have Manasses (the first-born son of Joseph) added to the twelve tribes of Israel and Ephraim (the second born son of Joseph) omitted from the fulfillment of those promises. (Genesis 41:51, 52)

Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. (Revelation 7:6) Here is the fulfillment of the prophecy in Genesis 48:22) Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow. (Genesis 48:22)
Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. (Revelation 7:8) Joseph will receive a double blessing through his son Manasseh . . . Manasses. Why should this be of any importance to those of FAITH today? It is important to ALWAYS remember that the LORD is not slack in His promises. Nothing is too small nor insignificant regarding ANY of His promises that the LORD cannot fulfill. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2nd Peter 3:9)

Then in the DOUBLE CALL to Moses we see the PROPHET to the nation Israel. 3. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I. (Exodus 3:4) Through the DOUBLE CALL to Moses, he was made a PROPHET to the nation of Israel. (Deuteronomy 18:15)

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; (Deuteronomy 18:15)
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. (Deuteronomy 18:18)
And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, (Deuteronomy 34:10)

Next also consider 4. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. (1st Samuel 3:10) In the DOUBLE CALL to Samuel, he was made a PROPHET to the kingdom.
There were many called by God when they were young such as Joseph and Daniel, however Samuel was a little child when he was called to be a PROPHET of God. BUT each had to go from FAITH to FAITH, and to GROW in grace and in the KNOWLEDGE of God. Although ALL born-again ones can serve God when they are first born anew, ALL must GROW. Growing in FAITH, GROWING in the exercise of GRACE, and GROWING in spiritual KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING of Him, the Son of God, who is the TRUE GOD and ETERNAL LIFE is the foundation soil from which ALL SERVICE is enriched. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, [even] in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. (1st John 5:20) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (1st Peter 2:2)

—–The Little Coat—–
The Journey from PRIESTHOOD to PROPHET

The garments of GLORY and BEAUTY was the COAT of GLORY worn by the TRUE PRIEST, Melchisedec, in the divine realm of the Eternal God. Moving to the earthly realm, we have seen the journey of the coat through HEIRSHIP, SONSHIP, INHERITANCE, and the PRIESTHOOD. Through PRIESTHOOD in Scripture, we have seen RELATIONSHIP, BLOODLINE, SACRIFICE and SERVICE in previous articles.
The Spirit of God uses the coat now to move seekers of truth into MORE facts about the coat. In the words ‘little coat‘ we move from the heavenly realm to the earthly realm and into the work of the PROPHET. The work and service of the prophet is NOT little. The size ‘little’ is about the place of a particular prophet, for you see there is also a GREATER PROPHET and He wears the COAT of GLORY and BEAUTY.
The  coat is called ‘little’ because the Spirit of God is directing our eyes and hearts to an earthly scene where a mother with her husband yearly offered a sacrifice to God. Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. (1st Samuel 2:19) The whole scene in 1st Samuel is earthly, therefore, the coat is described as little. Well, you may say, that in the previous articles, the HEIRSHIP and SONSHIP of Joseph and the PRIESTHOOD of Aaron were also earthly scenes. The difference is that the COAT although it also represents HEIRSHIP, SONSHIP and PRIESTHOOD, but now in Samuel the position of PROPHET is added to its understanding. The difference is not only the realm, but it also shows two worlds, the SEEN and the UNSEEN. In the UNSEEN world, there is the COAT of GLORY AND BEAUTY worn by the HIGH PRIEST of GOD, Melchisedec, and in the SEEN world, there is a little coat worn by the FIRST documented PROPHET of an earthly kingdom who was CALLED THREE times through a DOUBLE CALL to become a PROPHET to a kingdom. In the UNSEEN we have a divine heavenly KINGDOM and in the SEEN we have an earthly kingdom. There are many differences to be understood, but of course, the MAIN and MOST important difference is the KING. The prophet of the earthly kingdom reflected the character of the PROPHET of the heavenly Kingdom. Before we go on to the next mention of the word coat (1st Samuel 17:5, 38; 2nd Samuel 15:32) which deals with Goliath and David we first should understand why the coat is an important part of the progressive revelation of God.

Through Samuel, God’s earthly prophet was established to introduce God’s king on the earth, and through John the Baptist God’s earthly priest and prophet he introduced God’s divine KING TO the earth.

This is a new beginning for man and for the nation of Israel, for up to the time of Eli and Samuel, the people (a nation) but not yet a kingdom was ruled through judges. And after that he gave [unto them] judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. (Acts 13:20) Before God presents His earthly king, He presents His earthly prophet. There is a proper order in all that God does.  Through Samuel, God’s earthly prophet was established to introduce God’s king on the earth, and through John the Baptist, he introduced God’s divine KING TO the earth. The little coat (Samuel the prophet) anointed David (who symbolized the heavenly KING, the beloved of God, Jesus Christ) to be the king of Israel with a horn of oil. Symbolically Samuel wore the little coat of prophet compared to David’s greater coat of kingship. Through 1st Chronicles 15:27 and 28 when Israel brought up the Ark of the Covenant from the Philistines David was clothed with a robe of fine linen and also [had] upon him an ephod of linen.

And David [was] clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also [had] upon him an ephod of linen. (1st Chronicles 15:27)
Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps. (1st Chronicles 15:28)

As each specific earthly prophet had a specific purpose for being, each also had a unique calling. Do you see progressive revelation in the DOUBLE CALL of God? From Abraham, he was made a PROPHET to those of FAITH. In the DOUBLE CALL of God to Israel/Jacob he was the PROPHET to those of the promise of the birth of a nation and to those added to the INHERITANCE of that promised nation, and in the DOUBLE CALL of Moses we have the PROPHET of that nation. In the DOUBLE CALL of the Samuel, we have the PROPHET of the kingdom of a nation ruled by a king. Now tell me that the Bible was written by mere men without the leading of the Holy Spirit of God. Now tell me that the Bible is boring. Now tell me that you have read the Bible and it holds NO value and has no meaning. We KNOW that GOD the Holy Spirit inspired His written word because of its ORDER.
God’s order is just that . . . ORDER. The perfect arrangement, the perfect sequence, the perfect structure, the perfect design, the perfect symbolism, and the perfect time. Whether through words, numbers, placement or symbolism God the Holy Spirit NEVER FAILS to show the greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Order is much more than a command. Order is what God builds His spiritual DNA pattern on. His wonderful works are reckoned on order. His government is established on order. (Psalm 50:21; Isaiah 9:7) His written word is order personified in the Living Word.
Before we consider Saul/Paul and the fifth and final DOUBLE CALL from God on the Damascus Road let us briefly (I josh about ‘briefly’) let us explore the CALLER of the DOUBLE CALLS.

—–The Little Coat—–
● THE DOUBLE CALL
●The ONE who CALLED
and
●THE CALLER
and
●THE KINGDOM

In the first DOUBLE CALL it was the angel of the LORD who called unto him out of heaven. 1. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I. (Genesis 22:11).
In the second DOUBLE CALL it was GOD who spoke, and said, I am God, the God of thy father 2.
In the third DOUBLE CALL we see MORE about the CALLER. 3. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I. (Exodus 3:4)

Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. (Exodus 3:6)
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. (Exodus 3:14)

God called unto him out of the midst of the bush . . . I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob . . . I AM THAT I AM. Through the third DOUBLE CALL we have God as JUDGE as an unquenchable burning flame. Then God of the timeless Israel, and finally He declares the ETERNAL EXISTENCE of His Person. And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; (Revelation 3:14)
In the fourth DOUBLE CALL to Samuel, we see another additional fact . . . the LORD CAME, STOOD, and CALLED. 4. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. (1st Samuel 3:10) Scripture affirms that the glory of the LORD stood (Ezekiel 3:23), the LORD stood (Genesis 28:13; Amos 7:7; Acts 23:11; 2nd Timothy 4:17) and the angel of the LORD stood (Numbers 22:22, 24; 1st Chronicles 21:15; Zechariah 3:5), and the Lamb stood (Revelation 14:1).

This would make a good outline for students of the Bible.

WHO – WHY – WHERE – WHEN

1. The GLORY of the LORD STOOD

2. The LORD STOOD

3. The Angel of the LORD STOOD

4. The Lamb STOOD

The CALLER first is seen as the burning flame of judgment, then the CALLER covers ALL the bases of FATHERHOOD, and finally the grand climax: the CALLER is the great I AM. All is prepared and foundational in the Old Testament and in the New Testament there is the fulfillment. View the Bible as ONE WHOLE with TWO COVENANTS because the Bible is ONE in principle, in theme, in perfect order, and in purpose.

●THE KINGDOM

This DOUBLE CALL was different from all the previous calls because the Spirit of God specifically discloses that the LORD STOOD and called. Obviously, the LORD had been seated on His throne, and He rose up, and STOOD, and called. The LORD was about to lead Israel into a pivotal position of nationalism from an autonomous nation of twelve tribes to a theocratic kingdom ruled over by a visible king through the invisible King. Israel would be like no other kingdom, a kingdom with a king and a KING.
The LORD STOOD when He called Samuel because this was the momentous beginning of a NEW WORK: the work of building a kingdom and a KINGDOM. Knowing the end from the beginning, and the beginning from the end (Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Isaiah 46:10) God KNEW that this earthly kingship would tragically fail. Nevertheless, His DOUBLE CALL to announce HIS intent to form a nation around a king was only the beginning for IN THE END God’s will would be accomplished. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: (Exodus 19:5) And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. (Exodus 19:6)

At the end God’s purpose of a KINGDOM will be accomplished in a GREATER way when all those of FAITH (they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb ) will sing TOGETHER, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints. Saints of the ancients (the Old Testament – they sing the song of Moses and saints of the New Testament (and the song of the Lamb) will be joined together as joint-heirs together in the King of saints. CLICK HERE for the list of crowns on the head of the Lord Jesus Christ.

And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints. (Revelation 15:3)
And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:16) Note: His vesture . . . His COAT.

The LORD STOOD for His call to Samuel would draw much more than an infant unstable nation, and an earthly kingship together. The LORD STOOD because He was about to battle against the physical and spiritual combined forces of ALL evil under the leadership of Lucifer/Satan. The LORD STOOD in challenge to the kingdom of Satan. As prophet, Samuel would also be joined in this battle against the forces of evil; Samuel would become a warrior prophet engaged against the kingdoms of evil. The LORD STOOD; as KING and LORD of His KINGDOM for by His DOUBLE CALL to Samuel ‘his name is of God,’ and ‘heard of God,‘ a new earthly kingdom was about to be born to challenge and conquer all other earthly kingdoms both SEEN and UNSEEN kingdoms of the SEEN and UNSEEN world.
The first mention of a kingdom is recorded in Genesis Chapter 10, verse 10. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. The first kingdom was the kingdom of Nimrod, which in time became the kingdom of Babylon. How appropriate that it is documented in the double number of ten (10). Ten, of course, represents God’s perfect order, and man’s responsibility.
To become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation was God’s will and intent for His children of the nation of Israel. And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. (Exodus 19:6) A kingdom like no other kingdom on the earth was to reflect the Kingdom of glory and beauty in the divine sphere of worship in the heavenlies. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:6) Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. (John 18:36) The LORD however KNEW that in imperfect people and an imperfect nation could NEVER truly reflect the PERFECTION of His realm.
The announcement of Samuel (with the little coat) as a prophet was part of God’s perfect order. What was the perfect order? First, the prophet (Moses) introduced the priest (Aaron). Then Samuel (the prophet) introduced David (the king). Then John the Baptist who was both prophet and priest introduced the Lord Jesus Christ who was Prophet, Priest and King. The little coat to the garment of GLORY and BEAUTY could be referred to as progressive revelation in the fulfillment of God’s righteousness when John the Baptist baptized the Lord Jesus in the Jordan river, And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it to be so] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. (Matthew 3:15) God’s perfect order always begins with the LORD came, and stood, and called and God’s perfect order is always fulfilled when He determines and says, It is finished. From the beginning to the end the word of God reveals that the LORD came . . . the LORD stood . . . and the LORD called. In these three words CAME, STOOD and CALLED we also see the work and position of God the Father (He CAME), God the Son (He STOOD) and God the Holy Spirit (He Called).
From the first words in the book of Genesis when God proclaimed, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. In the beginning (Genesis 1:1) . . . His voice rolled as a million thunderbolts throughout the universe when He called Light to shine. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light (Genesis 1:3) and when He also called time into existence . . . And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:4) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1:5) God’s perfect order on earth began as He unfurled His perfect Priest, His perfect Prophet and His perfect King through His perfect love.  Now that is what I call progressive revelation.

The Fifth and Last DOUBLE CALL

Now back to Saul/Paul on the Damascus Road and the fifth DOUBLE CALL.

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, (Acts 9:1)
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. (Acts 9:2)
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: (Acts 9:3)
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? (Acts 9:4)
And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (Acts 9:5)
And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. (Acts 9:6)

In Acts Chapter 22 Paul witnessed to the people while standing on the stairs that he was chosen and called by God to be a witness and a voice to call ALL to Jesus Christ and in verse 21 he was directed specifically to the Gentiles after Israel had rejected his message.

And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. (Acts 22:14) For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. (Acts 22:15)
And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. (Acts 22:21)

Then in Chapter 26 of the book of Acts, as Paul witnessed to king Agrippa his mission is documented as changed from ‘the people’ (the Jews) to the Gentiles (verses17 and 20).

At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. (Acts 26:13)
And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (Acts 26:14)
And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. (Acts 26:15)
But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; (Acts 26:16)
Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, (Acts 26:17)
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. (Acts 26:18)
Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: (Acts 26:19)
But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. (Acts 26:20)

Paul always addressed himself as an Apostle of Jesus Christ. And as an Apostle he also prophesied about the man of sin, the son of perdition, the future condition of the Church, the coming of the Lord. At the time that Paul penned his letters, they were undoubtedly full of doctrine and prophecy.
Paul not only heard the DOUBLE CALL from the voice of GOD in JESUS CHRIST, but Paul received revelations not documented by the other apostles, of course, except for the apostle John in The Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Let’s remain on topic, and the topic is Samuel, the PROPHET.

—–The Little Coat—–
and
THE PROPHET, PRIEST and JUDGE

The principle of the progressive revelation strikes again through The Law of First Mention. Scripture discloses that not only was Samuel a prophet, but he was a prophet who was also linked to priesthood and judgeship. Samuel held a three-prong position. The spiritual voice of God in prophecy, the approved and accepted sacrifices of the burnt offering in a priestly role, and thirdly, judicial authority as judge, all in one person. That was a very unusual and even a unique position held by one individual. Very few notable individuals wore that coat of acceptance.
The interesting part is that Samuel was of the tribe of Ephraim. Samuel’s father was of mount Ephraim, therefore there was no connection to the Levitical priesthood, and yet, a very interesting thing is unveiled. Samuel offered a burnt offering recorded in 1st Samuel 7:9, And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered [it for] a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. (1st Samuel 7:9) And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. (1st Samuel 7:10) Samuel is connected to the priesthood in Jeremiah 15:1 and in Psalm 99:6. Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. (Jeremiah 15:1) In Psalm 99:6, notice how Samuel is connected to the Aaronic priesthood . . . Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6) What is God teaching through the addition of this man of the little coat of the tribe of Ephraim? Why was Samuel included in the book of Jeremiah and in the book of Psalms?
First, God was preparing Israel to become a kingdom with His king. Next, the priesthood had become corrupted where the glory of God departed from the Tabernacle and Ichabod (the glory had departed) was written across the priesthood. Secondly, the beginning of a NEW WORK was being prepared by God in this time of priestly corruption and defilement, therefore, God brought in Samuel to temporarily bridge that gap from defilement to godly obedience until the time of God’s faithful priest (Zadok). (Ezekiel 44:15; 48:11) The priestly line under the lineage of Aaron continued, however, there was a disruption in the line from Eli. The following verse (1st Samuel 14:3) shows not only the lineage of Eli but it also discloses the element of time. And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’S priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone. Ahiah served as high priest during Saul’s time as king of Israel. (A priest from a condemned line of priests ministered to the condemned line of the king.) Zadok served during the reigns of both David: Samuel anointed David with a horn of oil and it was Zadok who anointed Solomon with a horn of oil. (1st Kings 1:32, 39) Through the book of Ezekiel God discloses Zadok as the faithful priest who kept the charge of God’s sanctuary and during the millennial earthly reign of Christ in Jerusalem the sanctified sons of Zadok will once more have the honor to keep the charge of God’s holy sanctuary.

And the chamber whose prospect [is] toward the north [is] for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these [are] the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the LORD to minister unto him. (Ezekiel 40:46)
But the priests the Levites, the sons of Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood, saith the Lord GOD: (Ezekiel 44:15)
[It shall be] for the priests that are sanctified of the sons of Zadok; which have kept my charge, which went not astray when the children of Israel went astray, as the Levites went astray. (Ezekiel 48:11)

Although the Tabernacle remained for all purposes known as the house of God, the glory of God departed for a time while the LORD prepared Samuel to lead as prophet, and also He accepted the burnt offerings as sacrifice from Samuel.
The following message from an unknown named man of God was directed expressly to Eli. And there came a man of God. (Notice how often God uses people at a crucial time to relay powerful messages, and yet, God does not name them . . . they are known only to God . . . they remain as anonymous individuals . . . anonymity is a good thing . . . God protects certain servants through anonymity. God protects many of His stewards from themselves as well as from the onslaughts of others. It is the TRUSTED servant that God blesses with anonymity and therefore God TRUSTS that servant to deliver His powerful message. The world doesn’t need to know your name because God has personally written your name in His book of life.) Anonymity is a good thing. To continue steadfast in service to the Lord Jesus Christ without human encouragement and without peer approval requires total dependance on God. Those who quietly commit themselves completely to His service are the recipients of great UNSEEN blessings . . . that is  . . . UNSEEN by others.

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men. (1st Samuel 2:26)
And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? (1st Samuel 2:27)
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? (1st Samuel 2:28)
Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people? (1st Samuel 2:29)
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. (1st Samuel 2:30)
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. (1st Samuel 2:31)
And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. (1st Samuel 2:32)
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. (1st Samuel 2:33)
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them. (1st Samuel 2:34)
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. (1st Samuel 2:35)
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread. (1st Samuel 2:36)

Then through the one who wore the little coat, Samuel, God reiterates His message given previously to the unnamed steward.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. (1st Samuel 3:10)
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. (1st Samuel 3:11)
In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. (1st Samuel 3:12)
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. (1st Samuel 3:13)
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. (1st Samuel 3:14) (Since God’s servant (Eli) REFUSED to restrain and control the acts of his evil sons (while serving as priests) the iniquity within Eli’s lineage was outside of the forgiveness of God.)
Side Note: The Failure of Eli is the Failure of our Age. . . and honourest thy sons above me.
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10:37) If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26) God’s words are POWERFUL. There is a cross to bear for every Christian. (Luke 14:27; 2nd Timothy 3:12; Psalm 34:19)
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (Romans 1:24)
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (Romans 1:25)
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: (Romans 1:26)
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. (Romans 1:27)
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (Romans 1:28)
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, (Romans 1:29)
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, (Romans 1:30)
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: (Romans 1:31)
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (Romans 1:32) Silence of SIN is the voice of shared agreement thus, through shared agreement comes shared judgment. Those who relish the acts of sin and encourage others to engage in acts of sin are united together in the results of that SIN. God is NOT SLACK concerning His promises, but we too often disregard God’s promises of JUDGMENT. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2nd Peter 3:9) God promised life eternal, God promised salvation, God promised blessing and God promised a day of judgment. ◆ Side Note: The Failure of Eli is the Failure of our Age.

—– The Little Coat—–
Placed in God’s Perfect Order
and
The Principal of Placement

Tracing the mention of Samuel’s name in Scripture discloses some very interesting points of service. Outside of the 1st and 2nd book of Samuel, his name is recorded in six verses. Five verses deal historically with Samuel: 1st Chronicles 6:28, 9:22, 11:3, 26:28. 29:29; 2nd Chronicles 35:18) Two references, however, discloses God’s thoughts regarding His prophet. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6) Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. (Jeremiah 15:1) What does God desire that we should understand about Samuel?
If you follow this web site called The Genesis Epic, then by now you should understand not only biblical principles, but biblical structure. The spiritual DNA of biblical structure is based on The Law of First Mention, Progressive Revelation, Spiritual Numbers, Supernatural Symbolism, Word Rhythms, Placement, Alliteration, and Patterns are some of the examples of biblical design.
Where the Holy Spirit placed the name of Samuel discloses a spiritual HIDDEN message. The name of Samuel appears in seven (7) books: 1st Samuel, 1st Chronicles, 2nd Chronicles, Psalms, Jeremiah, Acts and the book of Hebrews: five books (5) in the Old Testament and two books in the New Testament.
Of course, 1st Samuel would be about Samuel, but he is NOT mentioned in 2nd Samuel. The book of 2nd Samuel is about the kingdom that Samuel (the little coat) had anointed and influenced. In 1st Chronicles we have five mentions of Samuel as the grace of God that historically bridges the gap between 2nd Samuel (the kingdom history) and 2nd Chronicles (detailed kingdom history). In 2nd Chronicles there is only one mention of Samuel and that is in the relationship of the passover of Josiah. There is also the connection between Samuel as a child prepared for prophethood and Josiah who was made king as a child. Both individuals were supernaturally sent and prepared by God for their specific role. And there was no passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (2nd Chronicles 35:18) This historical point discloses the faithfulness of the prophet/priest Samuel to uphold God’s directive in memory of the original passover.
Then in the book of Psalms, the book of praise, the book of songs, Samuel is connected to Moses and Aaron, the prophets and priests of the LORD.

Samuel AMONG THEM of FAITH who call upon His name

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6) He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. (Psalm 99:7)
Moses, the prophet, and Aaron, the priest, were designated by God as both PRIESTS  . . .  then . . . the comma . . . the time to breathe, the time to stop to consider . . . and Samuel among them. Samuel is joined and connected to PRIEST and PROPHET. The Spirit of God ADDS Samuel to Moses and Aaron in their service as priests and prophets. Without a doubt Samuel was called a prophet and a priest by God. Then God continues His message with the words . . . that call upon his name . . . they called upon the LORD.
When did men (as a collective group AND as individuals) begin to call on the name of the LORD? It was during the age of Seth: the son of Adam and Eve, the brother of Cain (the murderer) and the brother of Abel (the first man of FAITH).And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. (Genesis 4:26)

This was the first documented event of a collective gathering AND of lone individuals AROUND the name of the LORD. God’s communication plan to unite man around HIS NAME began in Genesis Chapter 4, the Earth number, and in verse 26 . . . two, the number of witness . . . and six, the number of man. Golly gee. . . that MUST be coincidental dont’cha thing? Before the flood there were men and women of FAITH until the time came that there was ONLY ONE man of FAITH on the earth by the name of Noah. Noah was the transition point, the last man of FAITH in the old world, and the first and last man of FAITH in the new world UNTIL the CALL of Abram.
After the flood and after the death of Noah FAITH ceased to exist and NO ONE CALLED on the name of the LORD, THEN God APPEARED to Abram and CALLED him out of Ur of Chaldees. Abram, through the proof in Genesis 13:4 CALLED on the name of the LORD. Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. Noah was the man of transition of FAITH, as he was both of the old and new world, but at Noah’s death FAITH then ceased to exist. Since Abram those of FAITH have called on the name of the LORD. Although Abram/Abraham was a prophet, he was also noted as the father of those of FAITH.

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? (Romans 4:1)
And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which [he had] being [yet] uncircumcised. (Romans 4:12)
Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (Romans 4:16)

Through Psalm 99:6 we not only have men who were prophets and priests BUT we also see the UNSEEN element of men of FAITH, of which, Samuel was named AMONG them. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6) This Psalm was the perfect place for the name of Samuel. These three servants called upon the LORD, and he answered them. Samuel was AMONG them of FAITH. Also the numbers speak of the double end (99) of the government of man (6). Through Moses and Aaron God began His government on earth, and through Samuel God began His work of nation building through a king: David. This certainly is a reason to sing in praise to God’s great movement through Moses, Aaron and Samuel.

Samuel as priest CRIED for Israel

Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. (Jeremiah 15:1)
Through this LAST mention of the name of Samuel in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit teaches the history of Israel, the history of nations, the history of Babylon, and the history of GOD. Yes, God has a history. In this LAST mention of Samuel, we see the importance of PLACEMENT. God deliberately placed the LAST mention of Samuel in this book of tragedy, the book of Jeremiah (the weeping prophet).  Jeremiah had every reason to weep. Want to weep, then read the book of Lamentations authored by Jeremiah. I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. (Lamentations 3:55)
In our section study verse we have three men: Moses, Samuel and Jeremiah. Aaron is NOT included but Jeremiah is included through his name as the inspired author who held the pen of pain, grief and suffering. Do you see that Jeremiah was more suitable to God’s message then the priest Aaron? Although Aaron and Jeremiah were both priests, God through Jeremiah 15:1, used the book of Jeremiah to reveal the SUFFERING theme of the priest instead of the worshiping and sacrificial priest. Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. (Jeremiah 15:1) This is PLACEMENT. The voice of God places Moses and Samuel on the same plain standing before Him as priests in service calling out to God for mercy for the people of Israel. Through Jeremiah 9:1 there is pain. Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! Through Moses we read of his grievous pain over Miriam’s condition. And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee. (Numbers 12:13) Through Samuel we read of his broken heart for Israel. And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. (1st Samuel 7:9). Moses, Samuel and Jeremiah were ALL prophets, and they were all priests. Jeremiah was a son of a priest which opened priesthood to him yet God ordained Jeremiah BEFORE his birth to be a PROPHET INTO THE NATIONS . . . not only to Israel BUT TO ALL THE NATIONS.

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: (Jeremiah 1:1)
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5)

Throughout the book of Exodus, especially in the 40th Chapter, Moses was directed by God to serve as His priest for the anointing of His Tabernacle, and to anoint Aaron as the earthly high priest of God.

Samuel, God’s prophet, OFFERED UP THE BURNT OFFERING to God and God ACCEPTED his offering; therefore, Samuel acted in the role of God’s priest. And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. (1st Samuel 7:10)

Let us recap the placement of the name of Samuel in the Old Testament:

1.  The book of 1st Samuel . . . the faith of Samuel’s mother Hannah, the history and service of Samuel.
2. The book of 1st Chronicles . . . Samuel as the bridge between tribal autonomy and kingship. .
3. The book of 2nd Chronicles . . . Samuel as the faithful prophet/priest keeping the passover compared with the child king, Josiah.
4. The book of Psalms . . . Samuel among the prophets and priests of faith in a song of a victorious thrice holy God.
5. The book of Jeremiah . . . Samuel compared with the suffering of the sacrificial priest and weeping prophet Jeremiah.

through the Principal of Placement
● The Book of Acts

Samuel is also mentioned in the New Testament in the book of Acts and in Hebrews 11. Thrice (I like the word ‘thrice’) so for those readers who are picky . . . three times Samuel is called a prophet and he is named AMONG those of FAITH.

Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. (Acts 3:24)
And after that he gave [unto them] judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. (Acts 13:20)
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and [of] Barak, and [of] Samson, and [of] Jephthae; [of] David also, and Samuel, and [of] the prophets: (Hebrews 11:32)

Samuel is also AMONG just men made perfect. To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, (Hebrews 12:33)
Through the New Testament, the Holy Spirit of God emphasized, memorialized and honored Samuel by informing the infant church of the spirits of just men made perfect of the past. In Acts 3:24 Samuel is named as one of many prophets who prophesied of the future age to come. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. In Acts 13:20 the message of salvation went out to the Jews as Paul brought Jewish history to memory . . . the gospel first went out to the Jews and then at their rejection the gospel went to the Gentiles. (Acts 13:14, 15, 16, 26)
Why was the name of Samuel used in Acts 3:24 and 13:20? Why was Samuel brought in from among many other prophets? Why Samuel and not Elijah, why not Ezekiel, why not Zechariah? The book of Acts teaches of a transitional time in the history of the church. Acts spans Church history. Acts reveals God’s government moving from Pentecost in Jerusalem to all the surrounding areas around the Mediterranean Sea. As the gospel spread it prepared the way of God’s government on earth to influence and to affect and to change the governments of man. Samuel was the prophet, priest and judge of a momentous transitional period from tribal existence to national preeminence. That period of time in Israel’s history can be compared to the what took place during the time of the book of Acts. During the time of Acts the Body of Christ formed from the little group of about an hundred and twenty who had gathered in Jerusalem. (Acts 1:15) The book of Acts, a transition, a shift in direction, discloses the spiritual growth of a NEW WORK into a supernatural WORK with a Supernatural force: the GODHEAD. Samuel is mentioned in the book of Acts as a pivotal focus point of a period of time in history when twelve tribes were primed and prepared for a national role in the history of the world. Do you see the connection? The book of Acts was also a pivotal focus point of a period of time in Church history when a small group of Christians were primed and prepared for not only an earthly national role in the history of the world, but they were and are still being prepared for a greater role in the history of God. Samuel was not only transitional, but his ministry was also temporary. Samuel’s ministry was not to be continued through his sons. His ministry was for a season. God’s purpose had been accomplished in Samuel. Samuel’s role to hold Israel together as a unit had been achieved so that king (David) would have a nation. Do you see how the role of the Christian is similar to the role of Samuel? The Christian is to aid holding ‘the nation’ together so that our King (the LORD Jesus Christ) will rule. But our ‘nation’ is not of this world, our ‘nation’ is of another world.
As Samuel, our individual ministries are only temporary, they hopefully serve God for His divine purpose for a season. There have been and there are many ministries that have been passed down from father to son, and from originator to organizers, however, understand THIS . . . ministries CANNOT be passed down and maintained in the same direction and in the same spiritual motivation as its beginning. FACT! At the third generation it is ALL failure. This is one of many hard facts that Christians have difficulty believing. Men and women of God are for a season. There are no more Spurgeons. There are no more Whitefields. There are no more Calvins, nor Bunyans. God uses individuals with their own unique personalities and experiences and voices and means with His words and message. God uses many ‘little coats.’ Each ‘little coat’ has been specifically made for a specific person for a specific purpose and for a specific period of time. Your coat has been cut from the fabric formed from the blood of Christ for the purpose to be of service to the Body of Christ for the glory of GOD the Christ of glory. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2nd Corinthians 4:6)

● The Book of Hebrews

The last time that Samuel’s name is recorded is in the book of Hebrews in the 11th Chapter, the FAITH Chapter. Why the FAITH Chapter?

FAITH is the one MAIN element that connects those in the Old Testament with those in the New Testament. FAITH . . . Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called [to be] saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: (1st Corinthians 1:2) FAITH . . . existed in the Old and exists in the New . . . FAITH of just men in the Old and in the New . . . FAITH does not and cannot stand alone for it is NOT of man BUT it is of God. Faith is a gift of God. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: (Ephesians 2:8) To those who totally focus their thoughts and their studies only on the New Testament and consider the Old Testament as irrelevant and spiritually meaningless please read the 11th Chapter of the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews is IN the New Testament for a reason, it is NOT to be ignored, for it is for the Christian.

The fallacy is in thinking that since the title is labeled HEBREWS that it is only for the Hebrew. IT IS FOR ALL those of FAITH. (If you were to mark every verse that relates to or is built on the Old Testament then I could safely write that approximately 3/4 is based on the Old Testament.) Hebrews is FOR ALL THOSE OF FAITH because this BOOK is about GOD . . . His work as PRIEST, PROPHET AND KING, and His service as SAVIOR and REDEEMER, and His Person through the SONSHIP of Jesus Christ and Melchisedec the High Priest of His realms of the SEEN and UNSEEN worlds. Since God did not lightly dismiss those of the Old Testament why should you? All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2nd Timothy 3:16) ALL Scripture . . . ALL Scripture [is] given by inspiration of God.

And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: (Hebrews 11:32)
Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, (Hebrews 11:33)
Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. (Hebrews 11:34)
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: (Hebrews 11:35)
And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: (Hebrews 11:36)
They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Hebrews 11:37)
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. (Hebrews 11:38)
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: (Hebrews 11:39)
God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. (Hebrews 11:40)

Read Hebrews 11:32 again. And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets. (Hebrews 11:32) Remember PLACEMENT. The name of Samuel was PLACED in the book of Faith by the Holy Spirit of God for the reason of his connection to FAITH. Samuel was born through God’s gift to Hannah through FAITH. Samuel was FAITHFUL to God throughout his ministry. (As a father of two sons, Samuel failed as Eli had failed, (1st Samuel 8:1-3) but as a PROPHET and servant to the LORD Samuel was FAITHFUL to God’s SOVEREIGN DOUBLE CALL)

Notice not only the placement of Samuel’s name in the book of Hebrews but also notice where God places his name in the last mention of Samuel’s name: Gedeon (Gideon), Barak, Samson, Jephthae were all judges. Why did God place the name of David, the king, NEXT? The list of names seems to be out of order, OUR order that is, but God has an order of His own, David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets. Samuel’s name sits between David, the king, and the prophets because Samuel is the bridge that connects David to God’s governmental scene and to all the prophets that followed AFTER Israel was nationalized through the reign of David. God has an order of His own.
Through the principles, precepts, and prophecies in the Old Testament, the New Testament will also open the glories, beauties and wonders of the LORD. The power of God through the Holy Spirit of God opens Scripture in unbelievable ways to the praying seeker of truth even through one little verse about a little coat for a little boy. Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Look where the Holy Spirit of God has taken us. Now for those of you who have memory problems, of which I am one of, let’s see the placement of the word coat in the Old Testament.

This is where we have been: . . . the COAT of SONSHIP

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he [was] the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of [many] colours. (Genesis 37:3)
And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, [his] coat of [many] colours that [was] on him; (Genesis 37:23)
And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; (Genesis 37:31) And they sent the coat of [many] colours, and they brought [it] to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it [be] thy son’s coat or no. (Genesis 37:32) And he knew it, and said, [It is] my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. (Genesis 37:33)

This is where we have been: the COAT of HEIRSHIP and HOLINESS

And these [are] the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office. (Exodus 28:4)
And thou shalt embroider the coat of fine linen, and thou shalt make the mitre [of] fine linen, and thou shalt make the girdle [of] needlework. (Exodus 28:39)
And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod: (Exodus 29:5)
And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound [it] unto him therewith. (Leviticus 8:7)
He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches ● ● upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these [are] holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and [so] put them on. (Leviticus 16:4)

This is where we are now . . . the Little Coat of the PROPHET

Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. (1st Samuel 2:19)

This is where we MAYBE going through the next articles, God willing.

And [he had] an helmet of brass upon his head, and he [was] armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat [was] five thousand shekels of brass. (1st Samuel 17:5)
And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. (1st Samuel 17:38)

And it came to pass, that [when] David was come to the top [of the mount], where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: (2nd Samuel 15:32)

By the great force [of my disease] is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat. (Job 30:18)

I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them? (Song 5:3)

Let us recap the placement of the name of Samuel in both the Old Testament
and in the New Testament.

1. The book of 1st Samuel . . . the FAITH of Samuel’s mother Hannah, and the history and service of Samuel through his FAITHFULNESS to the ministry of God’s Sovereign DOUBLE CALL.
2. The book of 1st Chronicles . . . Samuel was the bridge between tribal autonomy and kingship.
3. The book of 2nd Chronicles . . . Samuel (the little coat) as the faithful prophet/priest keeping the passover compared with the child king, Josiah (the little crown).
4. The book of Psalms . . . Samuel among the prophets and priests of faith in a song of celebration of a victorious thrice holy God.
5. The book of Jeremiah . . . Samuel compared with the suffering of the sacrificial priest and weeping prophet Jeremiah.
6. The book of Acts . . . Samuel’s ministry aided in the development from tribal Israel to national Israel under their earthly king. Through the book of Acts we have the development of the infant Church as its message shifted from Israel to the Gentiles, and from the hope of an earthly king to the hope of the King of Saints.
7. The book of Hebrews. . . . Samuel memorialized as one of the FAITHFUL, and as one of the spirits of just men made perfect. (Hebrews 12:33) Within the book of Hebrews is the HISTORY OF GOD. As the first mention of Samuel disclosed his history and service in the 1st Book of Samuel, so, God the Holy Spirit closes out the last mention of Samuel in the BOOK of the history and service of God.
